๐Ÿง  Handicap Betting Explained

Updated this week

What is Handicap Betting?

Handicap betting gives one team a head start or disadvantage before the match begins.

Itโ€™s designed to level the playing field โ€” so both sides offer more balanced odds.

Think of it as adjusting the score before kick-off.โ€‹

๐ŸŸ๏ธ Types of Handicap Betting

๐Ÿ” Handicap Match Betting

One team starts ahead (+), the other starts behind (-).

Your bet is settled based on the adjusted score after the handicap is applied.

Example:

  • Arsenal (-1) vs Chelsea (+1)

  • Final score: 3โ€“2

Adjusted score: 2โ€“3

๐Ÿ‘‰ Chelsea (+1) wins
๐Ÿ‘‰ Arsenal (-1) loses

๐Ÿค Handicap Tie

You can also back the exact margin.

This means the favourite must win by precisely the handicap.

Example:

  • Arsenal (-1) Handicap Tie

  • Arsenal must win by exactly 1 goal

Win by 2+ or donโ€™t win โ†’ bet loses

Note: The handicap only affects your selected team.

โšฝ Asian Handicap

Asian Handicap removes the draw โ€” so itโ€™s always win or lose (or sometimes refunded).

Youโ€™ll see this in decimal odds, usually as singles.

Key idea:

  • Whole numbers (e.g. -1, +1) โ†’ draw = stake refunded

  • Half numbers (e.g. -0.5, +1.5) โ†’ no draw possible

Example:

  • Real Madrid (-1.5) vs Barcelona (+1.5)

  • Real wins by 2+ โ†’ Real bet wins โœ…

  • Real wins by 1, draws, or loses โ†’ Barcelona bet wins โœ…

๐Ÿงฎ Split (Quarter) Handicaps

Sometimes your stake is split across two lines.

Example:

  • Bayern (-1, -1.5)

Your stake is split:

  • Half on -1

  • Half on -1.5

Outcomes:

  • Win by 2+ โ†’ both bets win โœ…โœ…

  • Win by 1 โ†’ one loses, one refunded โŒโ†ฉ๏ธ

  • Draw/lose โ†’ both lose โŒโŒ

๐Ÿ”„ No Draw Handicap

Removes the draw by using a half-point spread.

Thereโ€™s always a winner.

Example (Rugby):

  • Leeds (+7.5) vs Newcastle (-7.5)

After applying the handicap:

  • Higher score wins

  • No tie possible

๐Ÿ“… Handicap League (Season Long)

This applies a handicap across a full season.

Underdogs start with extra points, favourites start level.

Winner = highest adjusted total at the end.

If teams tie, dead heat rules apply.

โœ… Key Takeaways

  • Handicap betting adjusts the score to balance the odds

  • Youโ€™re betting on the adjusted result, not just the final score

  • Asian Handicaps remove draws and can include split stakes

  • More complex = more control, but also more to get right
